Dear MSAD 49 Community,
I writing to update you on today’s district-wide school closures. A concerning post was made on an MSAD 49 social media account. In consultation with local law enforcement and out of an abundance of caution, I closed all schools on Monday, October 30, 2023, in order to give law enforcement time to further investigate the matter. Several law enforcement agencies including the Kennebec Sheriff’s Office, the Fairfield Police Department, and several out-of-state agencies are involved as the investigation continues. The AG’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office are also aware. In consideration of the information I have received and in consultation with law enforcement, we will reopen schools tomorrow. I have received confirmation again today that, as we previously planned, MSAD 49 schools will have increased law enforcement presence. Our thanks to the Kennebec Sheriff’s Office, the Fairfield Police Department, and the Clinton Police Department.
The safety of all people in our schools and on our campuses is our highest priority—our buildings will continue to be secured and our staff will continue to be vigilant. It is disheartening to know that a child’s school experience is marked by these events. Please know that our efforts are dedicated to the physical safety and emotional well-being of our students. Every child, and truly, every person, deserves to feel safe at school.
I will update you when I have substantial information to report.
Sincerely,
Roberta Hersom
Superintendent of Schools
